Industry Record Setting Pacific OCS Extended Reach Well to Successfully
Develop an Otherwise Stranded Asset

Unocal developed an expertise in its Pacific OCS and SE Asian drilling operations of being able to successfully create out-of-the-box solutions to successfully exploit offshore assets which would otherwise remain undeveloped and stranded. In the late 1980s, Unocal was an industry leader in Extended Reach Drilling operations.

One example is the use of this, at the time,
leading edge technology to drill from Platform
Gina (OCS P-0202) to further explore and drain
a large geologic structure in an adjacent lease
block. This eliminated the need to set an
additional platform in deeper water in the
middle of a shipping channel. P-0203 #H-14
reached angles greater than 87° and achieved
10,800' of displacement from the platform at
13,439' TMD, 5,088' TVD. Industry records

were set without the aid of a top-drive and oil-
based mud systems
. Two technical papers were

published pertaining to the operation and
execution (OTC 5903 and SPE 19718). The
well has produced over 1.6 MMBO and 1.7 BCF.
