District Drilling Superintendent Los Angeles Basin

The Los Angeles Basin drilling operations faced unique circumstances due to not only its onshore activities overlay to one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the United States, but also its offshore activities worked adjacent to the nation's busiest port system. Operations needed to maintain health, environmental and safety compliance with a myriad of federal, state and local agencies.

The District Drilling Superintendent position was responsible for leading internal teams to engineer, permit and conduct field operations of the drilling and workover of oil and gas producing and water injection wells in both onshore and offshore (state and federal waters) of the Los Angeles Basin, California. This required the management of integrating sound engineering practices, field experience and rapidly improving technology to enhance overall wellwork operations. Part of the department's budget included the responsibility for the administration of the regular maintenance, annual inspections and safe operation of four each 30 ton offshore platform cranes.

Group accomplishments included:

  • Utilizing state-of-the-art technology to reduce drilling time and well costs by 10-18% from previous standards

  • Achieving an outstanding safety record of 1.0 Lost Work Cases for every 200,000 man hours worked
